Ghana is known as the gateway to West Africa. The population is about 25 million, of which 42% are children. The country is rich in oil, gold, cocoa, and other natural commodities. It is politically stable, has a middle-income country status, and yet one-fifth of the population still lives in extreme poverty. Orphans in Ghana are normally cared for by their primary and or extended family. However, due to the tremendous economic strain, a larger percentage of orphans are being raised outside the family social safety net.
